Sweden vs. Thailand
|Date & Time||Sunday June 16, 2019, 9:00 AM (EDT)|
The Line: Sweden -6 / Thailand +6 -- Over/Under: 6.5
Sweden and Thailand meet Sunday in FIFA Women's World Cup at Allianz Riviera.
Sweden is coming off a 2-0 win over Chile, a match where Blagult controlled the ball for 64 percent of the match and got seven shots on goal. Kosovare Asllani and Madelen Janogy found the back of the net late to give Sweden the three points and greatly improve its chances of making it out of Group F. Despite a near hour weather delay and sometimes frustrating play, Sweden kept the pressure on from start to finish and eventually prevailed. It’s going to be interesting to see if Sweden can keep up that defensive pressure throughout the tournament, as this club has the potential to surprise some folks. Sweden hopes to make it out of the group stages for the third consecutive world cup.
Thailand have nowhere to go but up after losing to the United States 13-0, which is a world cup record fo the most goals allowed. Thailand controlled the ball for just 25 percent of the match and allowed 21 shots on goal total. While there’s no shame in losing to the favorites to win the tournament, getting waxed like that could hurt this clubs confidence moving forward. Thailand does have four players with 100 or more caps, and it’s important that those players keep everyone grounded and focused on the task at hand. However, Thailand has lost its last four matches by a combined score of 1-25, so Thailand has been in some trouble that goes well beyond what happened a few days ago. Thailand has never made it out of the group stages in a world cup.
There’s no match history between these two teams.
During this six-match losing streak Thailand is currently riding, it’s allowed an average of 5.1 goals. That includes allowing a combined 19 goals in its last two matches. Thailand clearly has defensive issues and doesn’t have the horses overall to hang with some of the top teams in this tournament. With that said, Sweden hasn’t exactly been an offensive powerhouse as of late and probably isn’t looking to spend a ton of energy with a meeting against the US on deck. This is a match where Sweden should look to lockup a win and then park the bus where it can rest some of its key players.
This feels like an under game.
