Switzerland and England will play a match for 3rd place in the UEFA Nations League.
Switzerland played really well against Portugal 4 days ago and was actually a better team with 55% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal and 88% of correct passes and was holding a 1-1 tie up until 88th minute when Portugal scored a goal for 2-1 and 2 minutes after for 3-1 which was the final score of the game. Ricardo Rodriguez scored for Swiss national team from a penalty spot. Switzerland is good, balanced team with a good game style but with only 2 superstar players in Xhaka and Shaqiri, Switzerland is just not deep enough and doesn’t have enough quality to compete with top European teams. Everyone in Swiss squad is healthy and coach Petkovic is expected to put out the same lineup because Switzerland played solid soccer and has created a lot of chances and for that reason, there is no need to change anything. In Euro Cup qualifications, Switzerland is in Group D with Ireland, Georgia, Denmark, and Gibraltar and is the best team in this group and will most likely win first place and get qualified to Euro Cup next year. Swiss are ranked as 8th national team in FIFA standings which in my opinion is higher than they deserve at the moment.
England has started their game against the Netherlands really good and was in control from the start which resulted in a penalty shot which Marcus Rashford turned into a goal in the 32nd minute. Beginning of the second half was a different story, Netherlands was the better, more confident and better team who put a lot of pressure on England’s defense which resulted in a Kyle Walker’s own goal and the game went into overtime. Once again when a match went into overtime, England started to play worse and worse and had 0 shots on goal while their defense let 2 goals and England lost 3-1. Until this game against Netherlands, England was on a 7-game streak without a loss which unfortunately ended at a wrong time and once again England was left without the final game. With players like Sterling, Kane, Rashford, Sancho, and Ali, England is offensive firepower, but their biggest problem is their defense where they lack focus and consistency. Gareth Southgate was a really good player and is an even better coach now who made all of the English players better since he took over this team in 2016. English soccer association has a lot of confidence in Southgate and are satisfied with the way this team is going in and for that reason, Southgate was rewarded with a new contract and will stay head coach at least until July of 2022. Kane, Ali, and Henderson were not in the starting lineup against Netherlands because they joined the team later because of Champions League finals, but are expected to be in the lineup for this match.
Swiss are a good team but Lions are a much better team with more depth and quality. Since 2004., Switzerland and England played 7 times with England winning 6 of those matches, while 1 ended in a draw. England is a better team with more experience and quality who will look to bounce back after a tough loss against Netherlands and for that reason I'm going to side with England.
