Harry Maguire has become the most expensive defender in world football after completing a $97 million move to Manchester United.
The 26-year-old Maguire has joined the Red Devils from Premier League rivals Leicester City and has signed a six-year contract with the option of a further year.
Maguire becomes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s third major signing in the transfer window, following Aaron Wan-Bissaka's move from Crystal Palace and Daniel James’ transfer from Swansea City.
The central-defender is strong in the air and comfortable with the ball at his feet. He is known for his ability to break up opposition attacks and his confidence to bring the ball out of from defense.
With 20 England caps to his name, Maguire is not only experienced in the top-flight, but also at international level.
Manchester United conceded 54 goals in the Premier League last season – more than Manchester City and Liverpool combined – and the signing of Maguire will significantly strengthen United’s back line.
The Red Devils have spent big prior to the start of the upcoming campaign and this is shows how far behind the top club’s they have been in recent years.
Maguire’s fee eclipses the fee that Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk in 2018. This was the record transfer for a defender at the time, so how does he compare to van Dijk in recent seasons?
Since the 2016/17 campaign, Maguire has made more tackles and more interceptions than van Dijk.
On the other hand, van Dijk has made more clearances and also won a higher percentage of aerial duals.
All eyes will be on the world’s two most expensive defenders this season as Manchester United aim to compete with Liverpool at the top of the table once again.
