UEFA Champions League – Matchday 1: Best Bets – Odds, Predictions, and Picks
Monday, September 16, 2019 at 10:48 PM (Europe)
Europe’s premier club competition is back! The continent’s top clubs start their Champions League campaigns this week, so let’s take a look at the best bets from round 1.
Borussia Dortmund vs. Barcelona – 9/17/19
The two favorites in Group F meet on the opening night as German side Dortmund hosts Spanish giants Barcelona. The bookies are predicting an away win in this one, but I’m backing Dortmund to take all 3 points. Barcelona have made a very shaky start to the season, and conceded 7 goals in their first 4 La Liga games. Without the injured Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, the team doesn’t look as threatening, and Dortmund are likely to take advantage of this. Jadon Sancho and Paco Alcacer have been scoring and creating goals for fun this season, and after scoring at an average of just over 3 goals per game in their opening 4 Bundesliga matches, Dortmund are in far better form heading into the Champions League group stage.
Pick: Borussia Dortmund to Win – 3.00
Chelsea vs. Valencia – 9/17/19
Chelsea welcomes Valencia to Stamford Bridge in Group H. The English side have been unconvincing so far this season, winning just 2 of their first 5 Premier League matches while conceding a whopping 11 goals in the process. On the other hand, Valencia have conceded 7 goals in 4 La Liga games and will be confident of causing an upset against a weak Chelsea defense. The bookmakers have Chelsea as favorites at 1.90, while Valencia to win is 4.00. Taking everything into consideration, a draw seems like the most likely outcome on Tuesday, and at 3.50, it’s looking to a very profitable bet.
Pick: The Draw – 3.50
Shakhtar Donetsk vs. Manchester City – 9/18/19
English champions Manchester City have picked up where they left off last season by continuing to score goals at a frightening rate. They’ve found the back of the net 16 times already this term after just 5 top-flight games, and they’re likely to take their form into the Champions League. Shakhtar is the underdog here, and despite winning all 6 of their domestic matches this season, Manchester City will be a completely different test. Sergio Aguero (7) and Raheem Sterling (5) lead the goal scoring charts in the EPL, and they will no doubt be licking their lips at the prospect of facing Shakhtar on the opening day. I’m predicting that Manchester City will cruise to a high scoring victory without conceding.
Pick: Manchester City to Win, Keep a Clean Sheet, and Score Over 2.5 Goals – 4.50
