The first Quarter Final of the Gold Cup will see host nation and new favourites for the competition United States taking on surprise package Cuba at the M&T Bank Stadium in Maryland. Jurgen Klinsmann's side have struggled throughout the competition and although they are unbeaten they have not been impressive. Clint Dempsey is the star man and without Dempsey the US would really struggle as they have no cutting edge up front, Josie Altidore just isnt good enough for International football and Wondolowski struggles to bring his club form to the International stage. Michael Bradley though has been one of the few bright sparks and the Us captain has led by example and I expect he will be a key player if the US are to go on to win this Gold Cup.
Cuba have already overcome huge obstacles to make it to the knockout stages and Reyes goal against Guatemala sent the Cuban fans into orbit in the last group game. Cuba were excellent throughout the game though and the goal was coming for quite a while with the athletico cuban's counter attacking at pace and Reyes loking a constant threat every time Cuba went forward . Of course the US is a step up on Guatemala and if Cuba could pull off a shock here it would be one of the biggest shocks in international football in years.
Tough to find any value in the lines on this one, the US are far too short and as much as I was impressed with how Cuba played against Guatemala this may just be a stretch too far. Cuba though have improved in each game and America have struggled breaking down packed defences. Not a strong pick here but I am going to take the draw at halftime here as I think Cuba may just be strong enough defensively to frustrate the US and keep it tight till the half. Big price here on this at almost 3/1 so there is payoff for taking such a risky pick , one that I think can come in.
