The Line: US -118 / England +320 / Draw +250 -- Over/Under: 2.5
England and United States meet Tuesday in the FIFA Women's World Cup Semifinals at Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
England is in back-to-back Women's World Cup semifinals and looks to advance to its first ever final with an upset victory here. England is coming off a 3-0 beatdown over Norway in the quarterfinals, a match where they got seven of their 17 shots on goal and put the game out of reach by half-time. England has shown a very aggressive offense as of late, scoring at least two goals in six of its last eight matches and getting very quality looks on a consistent basis. The star of the tournament for the Three Lionesses has been Ellen White, who has scored in three straight matches and four of the five games overall. England is deep offensively with eight different players with double-digit international goals and this is an experienced side as well that won the third place game back in Canada. England also seems to be getting stronger as the tournament continues.
The United States passed a big test with a 2-1 win over France and now has to be considered even stronger favorites to win their fourth World Cup. In the victory over the hosts, the US set the tone early with a goal in the first five minutes and really limited any quality looks by constantly getting in a set defense. The US was a bit passive throughout the match and controlled the ball for just 40 percent, but it was more of a smart approach to not get into an aggressive shootout with a France team that has so much firepower. Megan Rapinoe has scored each of the last four goals for the US and has five goals in this tournament overall. Alyssa Naeher should also get some love after making some impressive saves in the quarterfinal win over France. The US has scored at least two goals in each of its last 10 matches. The United States will advance to its fifth ever World Cup Final with a victory here.
These teams met in a March friendly, a meeting that resulted in a 2-2 draw. A friendly match in 2018 produced a 1-0 win for the US. The United States has won three of the last five meetings against England.
The one and only concern I have with the US is possibly losing that edge now that the France game is finished. It’s human nature to relax a bit when the biggest threat is no longer in the tournament, and that’s when another team can come out of nowhere. England isn’t the team you want to look past. The good news is the United States is very experienced with eight different players having over 100 caps, and we’ve seen this team win many different ways. There’s no reason to think the US is going to get tripped up now.
