The Line: RUS +216 / URU +154 / Draw +202 -- Over/Under: 2
Uruguay and Russia meet Monday in World Cup soccer action at Samara Arena.
Uruguay is coming off 1-0 victories over Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and has now positioned itself in the knockout stages of the World Cup for the third straight appearance. Uruguay is coming off a victory over Saudi Arabia in which it got 13 shot attempts off and was able to ride a Luis Suárez goal all the way to the finish. The Sky Blue hasn’t been the sexiest offensive club at times, but they haven’t allowed a single goal in each of their last five matches, which has to give this club a new level of confidence as they get deeper into the tournament. As long as Uruguay takes advantage of its chances offensively, this is a team that’s going to be a tough out the rest of the way. The concern for this match is obviously motivation, as you see teams often throw away a match when they’ve already clinched a spot in the knockout stages.
Russia came into the tournament with very low expectations despite being the host team, and it’s already secured a spot in the knockout stages by beating Saudi Arabia and Egypt by a combined score of 8-1. Russia has been dominant on the offensive end and the defensive side that many were worried about coming in has been drastically improved as well. When Russia sees the ball go through the net, the goals seem to come in buckets and the confidence is currently at an all time high. This simply isn’t the same National Team we saw a few months ago getting destroyed by every team it played while giving up three goals apiece. Russia is aggressive, finding quality looks and has almost an entire stadium full of fans who aren’t ready for the party to end. The concern for this match is how motivated will Russia be with a spot already locked up for the next round.
There’s no previous meetings between these two sides.
It’s tough to predict a match when neither team has a ton to play for in terms of making it to the next round. Uruguay and Russia are already in the Round of 16 and could use this match as a chance to give other players experience and rest up for the next round. Uruguay is the better and more trustworthy team of the two, but I’m not sure that matters here. In terms of value, Russia is probably the play, as this team has found some serious offensive firepower out of nowhere and is really riding the momentum of the home crowd. The fact that they’re a better price than Uruguay and the draw, you almost have to take it.
I’ll make a value play on the Russians to sweep their group.
