Uruguay gets ready for their appearance in the 2018 World Cup by playing their final tune-up game when they host Uzbekistan in a friendly soccer match from the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay on Thursday night.

Uruguay will be looking to get ready for their opening World Cup match against Egypt on June 15th, when they face off against Uzbekistan on Thursday. There may be a bit of rust for coach Oscar Tabarez’s men heading into this friendly matchup, On the plus side, Uruguay had a solid showing at the China Cup, lifting the trophy after shutout victories over the Czechs and Wales. It will most definitely be difficult for Uzbekistan to notch a goal here, but with Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez head manning the attack for Uruguay, goals shouldn’t be hard to come by in this one.

Uzbekistan on the other hand will be playing for pride after narrowly missing out on a World Cup spot, missing out on a tournament position after dropping eight of nine points from their final three qualifying matches to fall to fourth place in Asian qualifiers, missing out on a chance to qualify thanks to a tiebreak. The concern with Uzbekistan in this match is their offensive woes after going winless in their last five matches, being shut out in three of them.

This will be the first all-time international meeting between Uruguay and Uzbekistan.

As much as I would like to think that Uzbekistan will put a strong foot forward for their faithful back home, I just can’t see Uzbekistan putting up much of a fight here. Heartbreak like that tends to linger as we’ve seen from their last few matches after being eliminated, and Uzbekistan just haven’t found their footing under new coach Timur Kapadze. I expect Uruguay to win this one handily, so I’ll back La Celeste to win this one by two or more on Thursday.

Pick:
Uruguay -1.5
