The Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers play early Saturday afternoon at the BC Place.
The Vancouver Whitecaps could use a win to get back in the thick of the West after a 3-5-2 record. The Whitecaps have had defensive struggles this season with 15 goals allowed overall and are coming off a match in which they allowed three goals. Offensively, the Vancouver Whitecaps have three players with double-digit shot attempts and have found the back of the net in three straight games. Pedro Morales leads Vancouver with four goals, Cristian Techera has two assists and Octavio Rivero has 19 shots. Defensively, David Ousted has come away with 37 saves on 54 shots faced. The Vancouver Whitecaps have picked up points in four straight home games.
The Portland Timbers look to snag more points after a solid 3-3-3 start to the season. The Timbers are relying on an offense that’s scored six goals in their last three matches and 14 goals overall this season. The Portland Timbers defense has also picked up, as the team has allowed one goal in four of their last five matches. Fanendo Adi leads Portland with seven goals, Diego Valeri has three assists and Lucas Melano has 14 shots. Defensively, Adam Kwarasey has come away with 19 saves on 31 shots faced. The Portland Timbers have earned points in five of their last seven road matches.
These matches between these two teams are usually close, as there’s been three draws in the last five contests. Each team is 1-1-3 in the last five matches overall with Portland winning the most recent match last November. There’s been two or less goals in each of the last four meetings.
Both of these clubs have been up and down all season long, and there’s a long history of draws when they meet. So, I’m playing the trends here and taking the draw.
