The 2015 WTA US Open will take place at the end of August in New York City at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. That gives us some time to look at future odds and some of the dark horses who can win the tournament.
Here’s some players you should consider putting on your card.
Serena Williams - I usually shy away from overall favorites and make this articles simply for dark horses and long shots. However, getting Serena Williams at even money is a flat out steal for the US Open and should be bet heavily. Serena has made the final of the US Open in each of the last four years and has won the title the last three seasons. Serena treats every major important, but the US Open means the most to her given it takes place on her home soil. Serena also has a chance to sweep this year’s grand slams for the first time in her career. Getting Serena Williams at +100 is a bet you must take while you still can.
Caroline Wozniacki - Caroline Wozniacki made the final of the US Open last season and has reached at least the semifinal in four or her last six appearances in New York. You can get Wozniacki with odds of +2500, which looks mighty tasty given her history in this tournament. Wozniacki has consistently been a top-five player this season and has nine victories over top-10 players since 2014, which include three this season. Wozniacki can hold her own against any player in the field and will be one of the top favorites to win her first grand slam if Serena falls short.
Maria Sharapova - For whatever reason, you can get Maria Sharapova with odds of +1200, which sounds pretty good for the second-best player in the world. Sharapova has made at least the semifinals in three of her last six grand slam appearances and won the US Open back in 2006. Sharapova has five victories over top-10 players this season and a ridiculous 15 victories since 2014. Yes, Sharapova doesn’t have a lick of recent success against Serena, but these odds provide room for hedging and make for a sweet payday if the top player in the world comes up short.
Sloane Stephens - I’ve been on the Sloane Stephens bandwagon since day one and continue to believe she has what it takes to be one of the top players in the world. Although Stephens has yet to fulfill her potential and has had little to no success at the US Open, she comes with odds of +5500 and is going to breakout at some point. Remember, at just 22 year’s old, Stephens has victories over Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic and Serena Williams. In fact, Stephens has been far more competitive against Serena than Sharapova has been recently. I’m not giving up on Sloane and give myself some hedging room in the later rounds for a profit regardless.
Victoria Azarenka - You can get Victoria Azarenka with odds of +700. This is the same Azarenka who has reached the final in two of the last three US Opens and made the quarterfinals last season despite just returning from injury. Azarenka loves the New York atmosphere and has kind of developed a little rivalry between Serena on this course the past couple of seasons. If Serena was to suffer a hiccup at some point during the tournament, Azarenka would have to be the clear cut favorite to win her first US Open title, and it would be a wonderful thing to have a ticket with those odds.
