The Line: -- Over/Under:
Agnieszka Radwanska and Simona Halep play Thursday night in the WTA Championships.
Agnieszka Radwanska needs a victory here after losses to Maria Sharapova and Flavia Pennetta. Radwanska just has not looked like her normal self, as she’s struggling to put games away, is making too many unforced errors and is clearly letting her frustration leak into her game. This is odd considering Radwanska came into this tournament with momentum after winning the Tianjin Open and making it to the semifinals in Beijing. Radwanska clearly has the ability to turn things around, but she must do a better job of limiting her unforced errors if she hopes to win this match. Radwanska has been bounced in the round robin stages of the WTA Finals in two of the last four years.
Simona Halep has split her first two matches with a win over Flavia Pennetta and a loss to Maria Sharapova. Halep, who made the WTA Finals championship last season, is looking like a safe bet to make it out of the round robin stages again. However, Halep continues to struggle against the top players in the world and has been a little shaky overall with losses in four of her last six matches. Also, Halep had just 10 winners in her most recent match against Sharapova, a number that must improve if she hopes to make a run for back-to-back finals appearances. Halep has the ability to prove why she’s ranked where she’s ranked, but the inconsistencies against quality players has to improve.
These two have played eight times in the past, and the series is split at four wins apiece. Halep has beaten Radwanska in four of the last five meetings with the most recent coming in this year’s Canadian Masters. Radwanska’s only victory over Halep in the last two years came in the 2014 Indian Wells Masters. This will be the seventh time these two meet on hard court.
I have more confidence in Halep than I do Radwanska given their history and the fact Halep is the better defensive player. Radwanska looks like she’s checked out of this match after two emotional losses. Give me Halep.
