The Line: -- Over/Under:
Ajla Tomljanovic and Sloane Stephens meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis Charleston Open.
Ajla Tomljanovic is coming off a straight sets win over Tamara Zidansek that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Tomljanovic won 68 percent of her first serve points and 30 percent of her second serve points. Tomljanovic won 53 percent of her total service points and converted on seven of her nine break points. Tomljanovic has quietly put together 11 wins in her last 16 matches if you throw in a pair of qualifying matches in Doha. Tomljanovic could certainly be more consistent with her serve, but she’s finding ways to win and is quickly becoming a dangerous player who can no longer be overlooked like she was in previous tournaments. Tomljanovic has split her last six matches on clay court.
Sloane Stephens is coming off a straight sets win over Sara Sorribes Tormo that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Stephens won 51 percent of her first serve points and 55 percent of her second serve points. Stephens won 52 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 17 break points. Stephens needed the win however it came considering she lost four of her last six matches entering this tournament and was seriously struggling with confidence. While she’s won some of her biggest tournaments on hard court, Stephens has become quite comfortable on clay and approaches the net more. This is a chance for Stephens to gain some confidence before bigger tournaments take place. Stephens has won seven of her last eight matches on clay court.
These two have played three times and Stephens has won all of those matches, including the most recent meeting last year in Miami. Stephens has won six of the seven sets against Tomljanovic and all three matches took place on hard court.
I predicted Stephens would win her last match in straight sets simply because the struggles couldn’t continue forever, and she passed with flying colors. Stephens should be the heavy favorite now that she’s fresh off a win, has dominated Tomljanovic in previous matches and has the benefit of having a day off.
Stephens should win another match in straight sets.
