The Line: -- Over/Under:
Alexander Zverev and Nicolas Jarry meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Barcelona.
Alexander Zverev is coming off a second match exit in Monte Carlo and has lost five of his last eight matches overall. Zverev is coming off a loss where he got very little on his second serve, had four double faults and was making the silly unforced errors that has frustrated folks over the years. Right when you think Zverev is ready to turn the corner and become somebody who is ready to push for big titles, he goes into one of these droughts that convince you he’s just not ready. It’s really tough to pinpoint exactly what Zverev you’re going to get these days. Zverev has won his last four matches on clay court.
Nicolas Jarry is coming off a three sets win over Marcel Granollers-Pujol that took 32 games to decide. In the victory, Jarry won 68 percent of his first serve points and 58 percent of his second serve points. Jarry won 65 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his nine break points. Jarry got 72 percent of his first serves in play and won 44 percent of his return points. It was as good as you’re going to get from Jarry and a winning formula moving forward if he’s able to repeat such an effort. Jarry has two career wins over top-10 players, both coming last year. Jarry has lost four of his last six matches on clay court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Zverev isn’t a player I’m trying to get behind when he’s in this form, but he’s still a top-five player no matter you slice it and he usually beats up on the guys he’s supposed to beat up on. Usually. Jarry hasn’t won back-to-back matches on the main tour since Shanghai back in October. While clay is his favorite surface, Jarry has little to no success in big tournaments.
I’m giving Zverev the benefit of the doubt and saying he wins this match in straight sets.
