Alexandr Dolgopolov and Kei Nishikori meet Monday afternoon in the third round of the Miami Masters.
Alexandr Dolgopolov is coming off a straight sets win over Andreas Seppi that lasted just 20 games. Dolgopolov is playing solid tennis as of late with wins in seven of his last 10 matches. Dolgopolov has certainly turned the corner after losing six straight matches since the US Open. Dolgopolov has quietly gotten back into the top-30 and would love nothing more than to get his second victory this year over a top-10 player. Of course, Dolgopolov will have to keep his unforced errors down in order to get the job done. Dolgopolov has made at least the fourth round of the Miami Masters three times.
Kei Nishikori is coming off a straight sets win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert that took a second set tiebreak. Nishikori has won 10 of his last 13 matches and majority of his recent losses have come against restable competition. When on top of his game, Nishikori is the ultimate shotmaker and moves the court well, putting a ton of pressure on his opponent. With Nishikori back to hitting the ball well, he’s going to be a dangerous player this tournament and this season overall. The last two years, Nishikori has done a great job of holding his own in Miami. In fact, Nishikori has reached at least the fourth round of the Miami Masters four straight years.
These two have played three times in the past, and Nishikori has won all three meetings in straight sets. The most recent match was in the 2015 Mexican Open. This will be the fourth time Dolgopolov and Nishikori meet on hard court.
Given the history between these two and the fact Nishikori is simply the better player, you have to side with him to get the victory. Dolgopolov is just way too up and down to back even as an underdog in this spot.
