Alison Riske and Venus Williams meet Wednesday afternoon at the Volvo Car Open.
Alison Riske is coming off a straight sets win over Frances Altick that took 17 games to decide. Including her qualifying for Dubai, Riske has split her last 10 singles matches but has shown promise already this season. Riske made the final in Shenzhen, which was only her second final appearance of her career. Riske did a solid job of holding her serve in her last match and finish points quickly and impressively. The issue with Riske has always been consistency, as she was once a top-40 player just a couple of years ago. However, Riske has had trouble returning to that form since and is still looking for that breakthrough victory that will get her over the hump. This is the furthest Riske has made it in the Volvo Car Open.
Venus Williams looks to regain her form after losing her first match at the Miami Masters and Indian Wells. Venus has been a hit or miss this season, as she did win the Taiwan Open, but has lost her first match in each of her last five tournaments. Venus is clearly getting up there in age at 35 years old, and she struggles big time with unforced errors. However, Venus is still more than capable of playing at a high level, as we just saw at the US Open last year and in Kaohsiung back in February. Venus is still hoping she can crack the top-10 at some point this season, but she must be far more consistent if that’s going to be the case. Venus has never lost in the round of 32 in Charleston.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
Venus is more than capable of stinking the joint up again if those unforced errors sneak back into her game. However, Riske hasn’t shown anything recently to make you think she can get the job done here.
I’ll take Venus to get the much needed bounce back victory.
