The Line: -- Over/Under:
Ana Bogdan and Garbine Muguruza meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Monterrey Open.
Ana Bogdan is coming off a straight sets win over Danielle Collins that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Bogdan won 79 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Bogdan beat a top-60 player without much of an issue, as she won 71 percent of her total service points and broke three times. Bogdan has now won each of her last six sets and is coming off her most complete performance of the tournament. In order to get the most important win of her career up to this point, Bogdan has to keep getting free points, as she’s produced a combined 21 aces in her last three matches. Those go a long way in winning a match with a final appearance on the line. Bogdan hopes to reach the first WTA final of her career. Bogdan has lost each of her last four semifinal matches. Bogdan has won six of her last eight matches on hard court.
Garbine Muguruza is coming off a straight sets win over Ajla Tomljanovic that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Muguruza won 77 percent of her first serve points and 38 percent of her second serve points. Muguruza continues to cruise in this tournament, as she’s lost a combined 10 games in three matches and is coming off a performance in which she won 63 percent of her return points. Muguruza hasn’t had the strongest start to the 2018 season, but her return has been aggressive in this tournament and she’s getting a high percentage of her first serves in play. It’ll be interesting to see if it continues, as Muguruza has won four matches in one tournament just once last last years US Open. Muguruza hopes to make the second final appearance of the season and the 10th of her career. Muguruza has split her last six semifinal appearances. Muguruza has won seven of her last 10 matches on hard court.
These two have never played each other on the tennis court.
Bogdan has played well up to this point, but the bottom line is she hasn’t faced the steep competition that Muguruza brings. Muguruza when she’s motivated and playing clean tennis is one of the best in the world. Bogdan has little to no experience in these type of matches, and we usually see players get crushed in spots like this one. This should be a routine straight sets match, something that Muguruza has had up to this point.
Muguruza makes it double-digit final appearances for her career.
