Ana Ivanovic and Elina Svitolina meet Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the 2015 French Open.
Ana Ivanovic is coming off a three-set victory over Ekaterina Makarova, and she’s played 11 sets in this tournament. Ivanovic has hit 49 winners in her last two matches and has won 76 percent or higher of her first serve points in three of her four matches. Ivanovic has shown good fight in this tournament, overcoming two matches in which she dropped the first set. The main concern with Ivanovic is fatigue at this point and the fact she’s committed five or more double faults in three of her four matches. Ivanovic needs to do a much better job with her first serve. Ivanovic is capable of playing far better tennis and will need to if she hopes to advance. Ivanovic has reached the semifinal of a major just four times in her career and hasn’t since the 2008 French Open.
Elina Svitolina continues to shock tennis fans, as she’s coming off a straight set win over Alize Cornet. Svitolina has played 10 sets in this tournament and 27 or less games in three of her four matches. Svitolina has hit 48 winners in her last two matches and has just two double faults during that time. Svitolina has done a solid job overall of limiting her unforced errors and putting games away when she has the chance. Svitolina is picking up confidence and doesn’t look like the young player she really is. Still, Svitolina has won 58 or less percent of her first serve points in her last three matches, a percentage that must improve. Svitolina has never made it this far in a major, as she’s the surprise of the tournament at 20 years old.
These two have played each other six times, and Ivanovic has won all six meetings. In fact, Svitolina has won just one set against Ivanovic. Their most recent meeting was in this year’s Madrid Masters, and this will be the third time they face one another on clay.
While Ivanovic hasn’t played her best tennis yet, she’s far more experienced and has the confidence knowing she’s owned Svitolina throughout her career. Svitolina has had a very successful tournament and will be able to build on this at such a young age. However, you have to think this magical run will come to an end.
