Anastasia Potapova and Coco Gauff meet in the first round of the 2019 tennis US Open.
Anastasia Potapova is coming off a second round exit in the Bronx and has won six of her last nine matches if you include qualifying. Potapova has played nine matches this month if you include qualifying, so the 18-year-old is gaining valuable experience, even if most of the matches don’t count toward her official record. However, Potapova is coming off a match where she didn’t win a single game in 12 games, and she ended up retiring due to an illness. It’ll be interesting to see if Potapova has overcome her issues that prevented a possible deeper run in the first New York tournament. Potapova has made it out of the first round of a grand slam three times in her career. Potapova has won four of her last five matches on hard court.
Coco Gauff is coming off a first round exit in Washington where she got 59 percent of her first serves in play and had 16 break points. Gauff has played just three matches since her fourth round appearance at Wimbledon, and two of those matches were qualifying for Washington. Gauff has become a star overnight and will certainly have the support of the New York crowd, but it’s going to intriguing to see if she can handle the big stage. Yes, Gauff was poised in the United Kingdom and seems beyond her years, but it’s different now that there’s some level of expectations to the 15-year-old and it’s on American soil. It’s critical Gauff gets off to a fast start to help settle any potential nerves. Gauff has split her last six matches on hard court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Potapova has an experience edge and the fact she’s played nine matches this year allows her to stay in a groove. It’s hard to predict what we’re going to get from Gauff given her age, but the lack of consistent matches hurts her as well. It’s not easy to be effective when playing a tournament here and there. Still, I’m siding with Gauff due to the home court advantage. Gauff has a little swagger to her game and that New York crowd is going to eat her up. This is one of those matches where the crowd could carry Gauff to victory.
Gauff wins her fourth career grand slam match.
