The Line: -- Over/Under:
Anastasija Sevastova and Dalila Jakupovic meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis Bucharest Open.
Anastasija Sevastova enters this tournament in shaky form, as she’s coming off a first round Wimbledon loss and has lost three of her last four matches overall. The good news for Sevastova is that this has still been a decent season, which includes a recent final appearance at the Mallorca Open, and she’s playing in a tournament in which she made the final two years ago. Sevastova has to be much better with her serve if she’s going to shake back into quality form, but she has to like her chances in a tournament that’s somewhat watered down in terms of top tier competition. Also, Sevastova has looked her best this season when playing on clay court. Sevastova has split her last six matches on clay court.
Dalila Jakupovic found her groove on grass, as she managed to beat Miharu Imanishi in the Wimbledon and force a competitive match against Anna Kalinskaya. Jakupovic still has very little experience on the WTA main tour the last couple of years, but she’s taken advantage of the few chances she’s had and has looked sharp on the slower courts. Jakupovic is a combined 8-5 on the main draw this season on grass and clay courts, which should give her some sort of confidence entering this match. Of course, that also doesn’t include winning the doubles title in the Copa Colsanitas back in April with Irina Khromacheva. Jakupovic is at her best on these surfaces and has a fighting chance if she can limit her unforced errors against the sneaky Sevastova. Jakupovic has won three of her last five matches on clay court.
This will be the first ever meeting between these two players.
Jakupovic is playing well and worth a shot here as a possible underdog, but this is a tournament Sevastova is very comfortable at, made the final here a couple of years ago and knows she needs to find some success to snap out of a recent funk. There’s no reason why Sevastova can’t make a deep tournament run to kind of right the ship. She’s the top seed in the tournament for a reason.
I like Sevastova to get the job done.
