Garbine Muguruza will be playing Anastasija Sevastova at the 2018 WTA Elite Trophy in China

Garbine Muguruza won her opening round match as she defeated Zhang Shuai in 3 sets. During that match, Muguruza returned serve exceptionally well as she won close to 45% of the points played during Zhang’s serve which allowed her to win 5 break points. Such a strong opening round win has put Garbine Muguruza at a very good position as she will make it into the second round if she can beat Sevastova in this fixture.

On the other side of the coin, Anastasija Sevastova had a big win in the opening round as she beat Zhang in straight sets. It was a solid performance from Anastasija Sevastova as she dominated the first set 6-0 before winning the second set via a tiebreaker. Sevatostave returned serve exceptionally well as she won 6 break points but her serve had issues as she allowed Zhang to win 3 return games. This will be a much tougher test for Anastasija Sevastova as Muguruza is a much more accomplished player than Garbine Muguruza.

Garbine Muguruza and Anastasija Sevastova have played 3 times in the past with Muguruza winning on 2 occasions and Anastasija Sevastova winning once. Muguruza has won the last two head-to-head matches with the most recent match at the 2017 Australian Open. Anastasija Sevastova’s win over Garbine Muguruza was at the 2016 US Open.

All in all, I am going to pick Garbine Muguruza to win this match. While Anastasija Sevastova has been in decent form, Muguruza is a much more accomplished player and has looked better this tournament. Furthermore, Muguruza has a great recent record against Anastasija Sevastova which should also play to the advantage of the Spaniard. All in all, I see Garbine Muguruza winning and making the semifinals of this tournament.
