Latvian tennis player, Anastasija Sevastova will begin her 2019 WTA Charleston Open in the second round where she will face Jessica Pegula from the United States.
Sevastova is the number 4 seed for this tournament and that resulted in her receiving an opening round bye. It has been a tough few months for Sevastova as she has failed to make it past the second round of a tournament since the Australian Open which was in January. Since the Australian Open, Anastasija Sevastova has a record of 2-4 which is very poor for a player with the accomplishments for the Latvian. It is important to note that Anastasija Sevastova has struggled with illness over the past few weeks which caused her to retire from her match at the Indian Wells Open. Considering her fitness and form, it is going to be tough for Anastasija Sevastova to turn things around.
On the other side of the coin, Jessica Pegula won her opening match in 3 sets. It was a very close match where Pegula lost the opening set but managed to fight back well to win the final 2 sets and the overall contest. Jessica Pegula is more commonly seen on ITF and Challenger tournaments so it will be a big step up for her to face an elite opponent in Sevastova.
Anastasija Sevastova and Jessica Pegula have played once in the past where Sevastova won in straight sets. The match was played in 2016 at the Indian Wells Open.
As far as this match is concerned, I am going to pick Anastasija Sevastova to win. Sevastova has struggled recently but she is a much more accomplished player when compared to Pegula. Pegula didn’t have the stronger opening round match and I don’t see her being good enough to challenge Sevastova. I see a straight sets win for Sevastova.
