Anastasija Sevastova and Kristyna Pliskova meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Charleston Open.

Anastasija Sevastova is coming off a straight sets win over Ashleigh Barty that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Sevastova won 70 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Sevastova cruised in her last victory, winning 51 percent of her return points and producing five breaks. Sevastova has broken her opponents a combined nine times in this tournament and has produced at least four breaks in each of her last four matches overall. This is Sevastova’s first quarterfinal appearance of the season and could be a turning point after inconsistent play to start the year. Sevastova has split her last six quarterfinal matches. Sevastova has won six of her last eight matches on clay court.

Kristyna Pliskova is coming off a straight sets win over Elena Vesnina that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 88 percent of her is first serve points and 43 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova has had it rough the last couple of years and is enjoying her most success in a single tournament since making the quarters last year in the Shenzhen Open. Pliskova has struggled this year to say the least, but she has been returning well this tournament and is getting free points with her serve, which makes her a tough out if those two things continue. Pliskova has lost five of her last seven quarterfinal matches. Pliskova has won nine of her last 12 matches on clay court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2017 Shenzhen Open, a match Pliskova won in three sets. The match took 29 games to be decided.

This match should favor Sevastova due to her movement and ability to play defense against the bigger and less athletic Pliskova. In the previous meeting between these two, Sevastova won 45 percent of her return points and gave herself 10 break chances. On clay, Sevastova should be able to have even more success with a slowed down serve.

I like Sevastova to reach her first semifinal since Brisbane of last year.
