The Line: -- Over/Under:
Andrey Rublev and Denis Kudla meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Citi Open.
Andrey Rublev is coming off a straight sets win over Noah Rubin that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Rublev won 71 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points. Rublev won 66 percent of his total service points and 50 percent of his return points. Rublev has shown a very balanced attack in his last four sets and is going to be very tough to beat as long as he can continue to be aggressive with his return. Rublev has produced a combined nine breaks in his last two matches. Rublev now hopes to win three matches in a single tournament for the first time since Doha. Rublev has split his last eight matches on hard court.
Denis Kudla is coming off a three sets win over Lucas Pouille that took 38 games to decide. In the victory, Kudla won 77 percent of his first serve points and 65 percent of his second serve points. Kudla won 71 percent of his total service points and produced 16 aces. It was a complete serving clinic for Kudla, and he’s now produced a combined 39 aces in the three matches he’s played in this tournament. If Kudla can continue to power his way through points and get so many free points on his racket, he’s going to be a tough out regardless of who is in his way. Kudla has a chance to win four matches in a single tournament for the first time since Le Gosier in challenger play. Kudla has won eight of his last 10 matches on hard court.
This will be the first ever meeting between these two players.
This is a big match for both of these players who haven’t had many deep runs recently and now see the draw kind of open up. The difference for me here is the serve, as Kudla has been dropping bombs and getting himself out of trouble when needed. There’s no substitute for a guy who can get double-digit aces, and right now Kudla is feeling himself a little bit.
I like Kudla to reach the semifinals.
