Andrey Rublev and Matteo Berrettini meet in the fourth round of the 2019 tennis US Open.
Andrey Rublev is coming off a straight sets win over Nick Kyrgios that took 35 games to decide. In the victory, Rublev won 84 percent of his first serve points and 74 percent of his second serve points. Rublev won 80 percent of his total service points and converted on one of his four break points. Rublev got 57 percent of his first serves in play, saved both of his break points and hit 12 aces. Rublev showed great mental toughness in that victory and has now won three matches in each of his last three tournaments. Rublev hopes to make his second career grand slam quarterfinal and first since the 2017 US Open. Rublev has won six of his last seven matches on hard court.
Matteo Berrettini is coming off a four sets win over Alexei Popyrin that took 46 games to decide. In the victory, Berrettini won 79 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Berrettini won 69 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his 15 break points. Berrettini got 54 percent of his first serves in play, saved nine of 10 break points and hit 13 aces. Berrettini has won all three of his matches in four sets and has hit a combined 160 winners during that span. Berrettini looks to make his first ever grand slam quarterfinal appearance. Berrettini lost his only other grand slam fourth round match, which was a couple of months ago at Wimbledon. Berrettini has won three of his last four matches on hard court.
These two have split the previous two matches, as Berrettini won 2018 Gstaad and Rublev won 2019 Marseille. Both matches were decided in straight sets.
You can make a case for either of these players, but you have to be more encouraged by Rublev’s success on hard court this year and the fact he just buried a red hot Kyrgios. Rublev also won the match on hard court back in February. And while Berrettini has been piling up the winners and has displayed impressive shotmaking, he’s had more than his fair share of unforced errors as well. Clean tennis usually prevails as we start entering the business end of the tournament.
Rublev makes the US Open quarters for the second time.
