Belgian tennis superstar, Elise Mertens will play Anett Kontaveit from Estonia in the opening round of the 2018 WTA Elite Trophy.

Elise Mertens had an exceptional start to the season as she won the Hobart International, the Ladies Open Lugano, and Morocco Open while also making the semifinals of the Australian Open. That being said, things have fallen away for Mertens over the past few months as 2 matches since the end of the US Open. While it is important to note that Mertens moved her focus to doubles tennis with preparation for the WTA Finals, she still looked out of form when playing singles. The biggest problem for Mertens has been her serve as she has averaged 3.5 service games lost per match since the end of the US Open. The third member of this group is the 2017 WTA Elite Trophy champion, Julia Gorges, so it is very important for Mertens that she wins this match.

In contrast to Mertens, Anett Kontaveit has been playing well recently as she finished second at the Wuhan Open while making deep runs at the other tournaments including the Kremlin Cup and China Open. The biggest positive for Anett Kontaveit is the fact that Elise Mertens is not serving well since the Estonian in an exceptional returner of serve. In the past 5 matches, Anett Kontaveit has averaged close to 4 return games won per match. Looking at the rankings, Mertens is higher ranked but considering recent form, Kontaveit will feel she has a chance of winning.

Elise Mertens and Anett Kontaveit have played once in the past. That match was in 2017 where Anett Kontaveit won in 3 sets.

This should be another exceptional tennis match as both players are very evenly matched. That being said, I am picking Anett Kontaveit to win. While I am a huge admirer of Elise Mertens, she has failed to play well for too long leading up to this tournament. Anett Kontaveit has been in great form leading up to this event and she should continue that and get the win in this fixture.
