Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Anett Kontaveit will play her second match at the 2018 WTA Elite Trophy where she will face Julia Gorges from Germany.

Anett Kontaveit was very poor in her opening match as she was comfortably beaten by Elise Mertens. During the defeat, Anett Kontaveit lost 6 service games which resulted in her in only winning 4 games in the entire match. The serve was the most disappointing aspect of the match for Anett Kontaveit as she only won 25% of her service games. With that defeat, Anett Kontaveit must win this match if she wishes to have a chance of making the semifinals.

On the side of the coin, this will be the first match of the tournament for Julia Gorges. Gorges is the reigning champion at the WTA Elite Trophy and she enters this tournament in great form. The last tournament that Julia Gorges played was the WTA Luxembourg Open where she won her 6th WTA title. During the tournament win, Gorges served exceptionally well as she only lost 8 service games in the entire event. With her opponent having issues with her serve, Gorges will be at a huge advantage if she can win her service games since there will be lots of opportunities to break serve. With the confidence from the win at Luxembourg, Julia Gorges will be very hard to beat in this tournament.

Anett Kontaveit and Julia Gorges have played once in the past. The match was last season in Hungary where Gorges won in 3 sets.

All in all, I am picking Julia Gorges to win this match. While Anett Kontaveit is an extremely gifted player, she looked out of sort in her opening match and it will be hard for her to turn things around considering her opponent's form. Gorges has a great record at this event and with her confidence high, I see the reigning champion starting her 2018 campaign with a win.
