The Line: -- Over/Under:
Anett Kontaveit and Karolina Pliskova meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Stuttgart Open.
Anett Kontaveit is coming off a three sets win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova that took 35 games to decide. In the victory, Kontaveit won 65 percent of her first serve points and 40 percent of her second serve points. Kontaveit had serious issues with her serve in her quarterfinal victory, but she did produce eight breaks in 16 chances. Kontaveit has now broken her opponents a combined 21 times in her last three matches, which is quite a stunning number and something that gives her a chance to make an even deeper tournament run. Kontaveit has won each of her last four semifinal appearances. Kontaveit hopes to make her first final appearance since last years Ladies Championship Gstaad and the fourth final appearance of her career. Kontaveit has won eight of her last nine matches on indoor clay court.
Karolina Pliskova is coming off a three sets win over Jelena Ostapenko that took 34 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 69 percent of her first serve points and 42 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova managed to fight back after dropping the first set and won 41 percent of her return points, while breaking five times. Pliskova hasn’t been able to serve the way we’re used to seeing due to this slow surface, but she’s been sharper with her return and has been solid defensively. Pliskova has lost six of her last seven semifinal appearances. Pliskova hopes to make her first final appearance since last years and the 20th final appearance of her career. Pliskova has won six of her last eight matches on indoor clay court.
This will be the first match between these two on the tennis court.
Kontaveit has had great return numbers so far this tournament, but even on clay, Pliskova isn’t giving away so many break chances. If Kontaveit continues to give away points with her serve, she has no chance of winning this match. Pliskova has been craftier with her shots as of late and has obviously far more experience in big matches. I just can’t back Kontaveit based on her weak second serve percentages.
This should be a victory for Pliskova.
