The Line: -- Over/Under:
Russian tennis superstar Maria Sharapova is set to play at the 2019 WTA Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada. Sharapova will begin her tournament against Anett Kontaveit from Estonia.
Anett Kontaveit last played at Wimbledon where she was eliminated in the third round. It was a decent tournament but Kontaveit lost to an unseeded player which would make her feel disappointed about the result. In general, Anett Kontaveit has been in poor form as the Estonian has only won 3 matches since the French Open.
The Rogers Cup has always been a tough tournament for Anett Kontaveit as she has only won 50% of her matches at this venue. The draw has been unkind to Anett Kontaveit and she may find it tough to compete against Maria Sharapova.
Looking at Maria Sharapova, the Russian had to retire during her opening round match at Wimbledon due to injury. Injuries have hampered Sharapova greatly in 2019 as the Russian has only played 5 tournaments this season. Sharapova has had a decent break from tennis and while she may be rusty, she should be fit for this tournament.
Maria Sharapova has a decent record at the Rogers Cup as she made the final of this tournament in 2009. Sharapova made the third round of this tournament last season.
Anett Kontaveit and Maria Sharapova have played each other once in the past. The match was played in 2017 at the Stuttgart Open where Maria Sharapova won in straight sets.
Anett Kontaveit is a very talented player and she is seen as a future superstar of tennis. In this match, Kontaveit is playing against one of the greatest female tennis players in Maria Sharapova. Despite her recent struggles, Sharapova still seems to be playing well as she was very impressive during her match at Wimbledon where she got injured. Sharapova has a good record at the Rogers Cup and she is playing Anett Kontaveit in a time when the Estonian is in poor form. Neither player is likely to make huge impacts in this tournament but I see Sharapova being good enough to win this match and make it through to the second round.
