The Line: -- Over/Under:
Anett Kontaveit and Venus Williams meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Rome Masters.
Anett Kontaveit is coming off a straight sets win over Svetlana Kuznetsova that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Kontaveit won 75 percent of her first serve points and 40 percent of her second serve points. Kontaveit was very sharp with her return in which she won 42 percent of her return points and gave herself 12 break chances. Kontaveit has really turned her season around on clay court and has a chance to make the quarterfinals in two of her last three tournaments. Kontaveit has four career wins over top-10 players with two of them coming this year. Kontaveit has won four of her last five matches on clay court.
Venus Williams is coming off a three sets win over Elena Vesnina that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Venus won 63 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Venus had to grind to win her match, as she won just 59 percent of her total service points, but she did break her opponent seven times and came through big in the third set. Venus hasn’t had the best or most consistent season, but she’s a fighter and continues to make her opponent earn it if they’re going to win. Venus hopes to make back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in the Rome Masters. Venus has won seven of her last 10 matches on clay court.
These two have played three times and Venus has won two of those matches. The most recent was in this years Madrid Masters, a match Kontaveit won in three sets. The other two matches were in the 2016 French Open and 2015 US Open.
Kontaveit is at her best on clay, as it’s where she’s had some of her best success and three of her four wins over top-10 players have come on this surface. However, Kontaveit doesn’t have many deep runs in big tournaments and experience can decide a lot of these matches. Venus isn’t always pretty, but she grinds and can really wear on an inexperienced opponent.
Don’t love this pick, but I’d side with Venus if forced to make a pick.
