German tennis superstar, Angelique Kerber will begin her French Open campaign against Anastasia Potapova from Russia.

Angelique Kerber has had a tough few weeks. Kerber last played at the Madrid Masters where she was forced to withdraw due to an ankle injury. Prior to her injury, Kerber looked in decent form as she made the semifinals of the Monterrey Open and the quarterfinals of the Stuttgart Open. Returning to clay court tennis is not an easy task following an ankle injury but Kerber looked solid during her practice sessions and it seems like the German superstar is back to full fitness. The French Open is the only Grand Slam which Kerber has not won but she played well at this event last season as she made the quarterfinals.

In comparison, Anastasia Potapova is still very young in her tennis career as this is her first French Open campaign. As a junior, Potapova has had success at the French Open as she made the semifinals of the girls’ tournament in 2016. Leading up to this event, Anastasia Potapova has not been at her best as she failed to qualify for both the Madrid Open and the Italian Open. Anastasia Potapova has only won 2 matches on clay this season which will make it tough for her to have any confidence for this fixture.

Angelique Kerber and Anastasia Potapova have not played each other in the past.

Even with an injury cloud, Angelique Kerber still enters this match as a massive favourite. Her opponent, Anastasia Potapova is a very talented player but it seems like a very tough task for her to win her first French Open match as it is against the number 5 seed. Kerber is vastly experienced and looks to be fit. With that in mind, I see Angelique Kerber winning this match and making it into the second round of the tournament.

Pick:
Angelique Kerber
