Angelique Kerber vs Anett Kontaveit - 2/13/2019 WTA Tour - Qatar Open Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

2018 Wimbledon winner, Angelique Kerber will begin her 2019 WTA Qatar Open campaign in the second round. Kerber’s first match at the Qatar Open will be against Anett Kontaveit from Estonia.

Angelique Kerber had a very poor Australian Open campaign as she lost in the fourth round of the tournament. It was a very bad event for Kerber as she only won 2 games during the match she lost. In general, Kerber has had a poor start to 2019 and it seems like she is lacking focus as she has been making too many unforced errors. That being said, Kerber has had some time off since the Australian Open and she looks focused as she enters this tournament. Angelique Kerber finished 2nd at the Qatar Open in 2014 meaning she should be very happy to return to this venue.

On the other side of the court, Anett Kontaveit won her previous match in straight sets. It was a solid performance by Kontaveit as she won 73% of his service games while breaking his opponent’s serve on 4 occasions. It has been a decent start to 2019 for Kontaveit as she performed well at the Brisbane International although she is yet to beat an opponent with the skill of Angelique Kerber this season.

Anett Kontaveit and Angelique Kerber have played twice in the past. Surprisingly, Kontaveit has a 2-0 record against Kerber. That being said, Kerber had issues related to injuries during both previous matches. The most recent match between Kerber and Kontaveit was at WTA Stuttgart in 2018 where Kerber retired in the second set due to injury.

Taking everything into consideration, I am picking Angelique Kerber to win this match. Kerber has lots of experience and is a very accomplished player. Furthermore, Kerber has a great record in Qatar. Looking at these two players, Kerber is a much stronger player and I see her winning this match.
