German tennis superstar, Angelique Kerber has made it into the fourth round of the 2019 WTA Indian Wells Open. Kerber will now face Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus. Sabalenka is the number 9 seed while Kerber is the number 8 seed so this is expected to be a very close match.
Aryna Sabalenka enters this match having beaten Lesia Tsurenko in straight sets in the previous round. It was a very impressive performance by Sabalenka as she dominated her opponent’s serve. During the win, Aryna Sabalenka 56% of her receiving points which allowed her to break her opponent’s serve on 6 occasions. Sabalenka 60% of her return games which ensured she was always comfortably ahead of her opponent. It is important to note that Sabalenka had her serve broken on 3 occasions. It will be important for Sabalenka to improve her serve in this match as Kerber is a very strong defensive player and is one of the best at exploiting such a problem.
Looking at Angelique Kerber, the 2018 Wimbledon winner played 3 sets to win her previous match. Kerber lost the opening set but she switched gears for the final 2 sets which she won with ease. Kerber’s returning was exceptional as she broke her opponents serve on 7 occasions. Similar to Sabalenka, Kerber wasn’t at her best when serving as she lost 4 service games. This match will test Angelique Kerber as Aryna Sabalenka is one of the most skilled young players on the tour.
This will be the first time that Angelique Kerber and Aryna Sabalenka will be playing each other at a WTA tournament.
I am expecting this to be a very tight match which Aryna Sabalenka will win. Kerber has not been at her this season while Sabalenka has been very strong. Sabalenka has already won a WTA title this season and she is looking very strong at this event. With that in mind, I see Aryna Sabalenka winning this match and making the quarterfinals of the tournament.
