Current Wimbledon champion, Angelique Kerber has made it into the third round of the 2019 WTA Australian Open. Angelique Kerber will now play against Kimberly Birrell from Australia.
Kimberly Birrell entered this tournament via the wildcard playoff and has impressed many as she has won both her matches in convincing fashion. In her previous match, Kimberly Birrell beat the number 29 seed, Donna Vekic, in 3 sets. It was impressive to watch Kimberly Birrell return serve as the Australian won over 43% of her receiving points. Kimberly Birrell won 5 break points which allowed her to gain an advantage over her opponent. Playing in her home country, Kimberly Birrell has received huge support from the crowd and that is expected to continue in this match. It is going to take an outstanding effort from Kimberly Birrell to compete in this match as she is playing against the world number 2.
Angelique Kerber won the second-round match with ease as she defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets. It was a dominant display by Kerber as she won 100% of her service games while breaking her opponents serve on 3 occasions. Angelique Kerber has a great record at the Australian Open as she won the title in 2016. Kerber is far more accomplished when compared to her opponent, so I am expecting the world number 2 to enter this match feeling confident.
This will be the first time that Angelique Kerber and Kimberly Birrell will be playing each other at a WTA event.
All in all, I am expecting Angelique Kerber to end Kimberly Birrell’s dream Australian Open run. Kimberly Birrell has played very well but I don’t think she has the ability to compete with an opponent who is amongst the best players in the world. Angelique Kerber has an outstanding record at Melbourne Park and I see her winning this match with ease.
