German tennis superstar, Angelique Kerber has made it into the quarterfinals of the 2019 Eastbourne International in England. At this stage of the tournament, Kerber will play against Simona Halep from Romania.
In the previous round, Angelique Kerber defeated Rebecca Peterson in straight sets. During the victory, Kerber served exceptionally well as she won 76% of her service points which allowed her to win all of her service games. Angelique Kerber was dominant in the final set as she won 6-0. Kerber has been in good form throughout this tournament as she is yet to lose a set.
Angelique Kerber entered this tournament in decent touch. Kerber’s previous tournament was the Mallorca Open where she played well as she reached the semifinals. During her Mallorca Open campaign, Angelique Kerber defeated both Caroline Garcia and Maria Sharapova. Kerber has an outstanding record on grass as she won Wimbledon last season. Kerber has also won the Birmingham Classic.
On the other side of the coin, Simona Halep defeated Polona Hercog in 3 sets. Halep lost the second set but was comfortable for the remainder of the match. During the victory, Simona Halep won 77% of her service games and 6 return games. The receiving was particularly impressive as Halep won 48% of her receiving points.
This is Simona Halep’s first grass court tournament of 2019 as she has not played since the French Open. Halep is an outstanding player and she played well at the French Open as she made the quarterfinals. Grass is Simona Halep’s weakest tournament as she only won 67% of her matches on this surface last season. This will be a tough match for Halep as she is playing an outstanding grass court player in Kerber.
Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber have played each other 12 times in the past. Halep has won on 7 occasions while Kerber has won 5 times. The most recent match between these two players was in 2018 at the Fed Cup where Simona Halep won in 3 sets. Kerber has a 1-0 record against Halep on grass.
Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick Angelique Kerber to win this match. Kerber is an outstanding grass court player and her record on grass is stronger than her opponent. Playing in Mallorca seems to have given Kerber some form and I see her having enough momentum to defeat Simona Halep and qualify for the semifinals.
