T. Maria +500 / A. Kerber -800
2018 Wimbledon champion, Angelique Kerber will begin her title defense against Tatjana Maria.
Angelique Kerber enters this tournament in supreme form after she finished second at the Eastbourne International last week. It was a strong campaign by Kerber as she defeated the likes of Simona Halep and Samantha Stosur. Prior to Eastbourne, Kerber had a very good tournament at Mallorca where she reached the semifinals. At the Mallorca Open, Angelique Kerber defeated both Caroline Garcia and Maria Sharapova.
Angelique Kerber has an outstanding record on grass as she has won 72% of her matches on this surface. Kerber has won has made the final at Wimbledon twice. Outside of Wimbledon, Kerber has also won the Birmingham Classic.
Angelique Kerber is well suited to the conditions at Wimbledon and she enters this tournament in great form.
On the other side of the court, Tatjana Maria has also had a good start to the grass court season as she made the semifinals of the ITF 05A event and the Nottingham Open. Maria has won 75% of her grass court matches in 2019 and looks in good touch as she enters this tournament.
Throughout her career, Tatjana Maria has struggled at Wimbledon as her win rate at this event in only 38%. Maria made the second round of this tournament in 2018. The best performance by Tatjana Maria at Wimbledon was in 2015 when she made the third round.
This is an extremely tough opening round match for Tatjana Maria as she is playing against the number 5 seed.
This will be the first time that Angelique Kerber and Tatjana Maria will be playing each other at a WTA event.
Tatjana Maria has been very impressive over the past few weeks as she has performed well in both grass court tournaments she has played. Maria is a highly experienced player but I see her losing this match. Angelique Kerber has found some outstanding form in the past few weeks and the German superstar has produced some big results. Kerber has an outstanding record at Wimbledon and she should be confident as she enters this match. With all that taken into consideration, I see Angelique Kerber winning this match.
