Former world number 1, Angelique Kerber, will begin her Wimbledon campaign on Tuesday. The German superstar will be taking on former world number 2, Vera Zvonareva. Both these players have been at the top of the tennis world and it will interesting to see how they perform.
Vera Zvonareva will play her first grand slam in over 3 years. The Russian turned professional in 2000 and it is quite impressive that she is still around. Vera Zvonareva has had a very impressive career and she will have fond memories of Wimbledon having won the mixed doubles in 2006 and reached the final in 2010. While it is unlikely she will get that late in the tournament, she will feel that she can still challenge some of the top players.
On the other side of the court, Angelique Kerber will look to beat one of the legends of the game. Angelique Kerber reached the finals at Wimbledon in 2016 but has yet to win this grand slam. While it is safe to say that she is not at the level she was in 2016, she is not far from it. The German will enter this tournament high on confidence after she made the quarterfinals of the French Open and the semifinals of her last WTA tournament. Angelique Kerber will expect to make it deep in this tournament and this is a very realistic target.
All in all, I see Angelique Kerber winning this match. While it would be romantic to see Vera Zvonareva win and make the later stages of the tournament, it just seems way too unlikely. The Russian is not the players she once was and she will be playing one of the most players of 2018. While this should not be an easy game for Angelique Kerber, she should win and make it to the next round.
As far as betting is concerned, we are not getting a great price to wager on Angelique Kerber to win this match so I would avoid that bet. The best bet is the over 2.5 sets. I see Vera Zvonareva winning a set on her Wimbledon return so this bet should win.
