The Line: -- Over/Under:
German tennis superstar, Angelique Kerber will begin her grass court season in Spain as she plays at the 2019 WTA Mallorca Open. Kerber will begin her tournament against Ysaline Bonaventure from Belgium.
Ysaline Bonaventure makes it into the opening round via the qualifying event. In the final match of the qualifying event, Bonaventure played against Jil Teichmann. It was a solid victory for Bonaventure as he won 78% of his service games and 5 return games to secure a straight sets win. This is Ysaline Bonaventure’s second grass court tournament of 2019 after she played at the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships where she was eliminated in the second round. Despite her recent wins, Bonaventure will know that this will be an extremely tough match as she is playing against the top seed.
Angelique Kerber has struggled with injury in recent weeks and that caused her to miss much of the clay court season. Kerber was eliminated in the opening round of the French Open and it should be good news for the German that the tour has moved onto the grass court season. Angelique Kerber is an outstanding grass court player and that is proven by the fact that she won Wimbledon last season. Kerber has made the final at Wimbledon twice and has also won the Birmingham Classic. Kerber was 10-2 on grass last season and following a relatively quiet clay season, she should be fresh as she enters this tournament. Kerber is the top-ranked player at Mallorca and she should be very tough to beat.
This will be the first time that Angelique Kerber and Ysaline Bonaventure will be playing each other at a WTA event.
Ysaline Bonaventure has been solid over the past few weeks and she has accordingly been awarded a place in this tournament. Ysaline Bonaventure looked composed throughout the qualifiers but this is an entirely different challenge. Angelique Kerber is an elite player and her record on grass is among the best in the world. With that in mind, I see Angelique Kerber. Kerber has too much skill and experience for Bonaventure and I see the German winning this match with some ease.
