Greek tennis superstar Maria Sakkari has made it into the third round of the 2019 WTA Cincinnati Masters. At this stage of the tournament, Maria Sakkari is set to play against Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus.
Aryna Sabalenka was very impressive in the previous round as she defeated Zheng Saisai in straight sets. The serving was a big asset for Sabalenka as she won 67% of her service points which allowed her to win 90% of her service games. The receiving was also solid from Sabalenka as she won 3 return games. Sabalenka has been in good form as she is yet to lose a set in this tournament. Prior to arriving at the Cincinnati Masters, Aryna Sabalenka finished second at the Silicon Valley Open which shows that she is in supreme touch.
On the other side of the court, Maria Sakkari had a big win in the previous round as she defeated Petra Kvitova in 3 sets. It was a close match but Sakkari showed her ability to handle pressure as she ran away with the final set 6-3. During the win, Maria Sakkari won 71% of her service games and 4 return games. It was a big win for Sakkari as she defeated an elite player but this match is expected to be equally tough as Sabalenka is also a very strong player.
This will be the first time that Maria Sakkari and Aryna Sabalenka will be playing each other at a WTA event.
Maria Sakkari has had some big wins in 2019 but she seems to lack the finishing ability to make a big impact at a tournament. In comparison, Sabalenka seems to be heavily reliant on her form as her wins seem to come in clusters. As it currently suggests, Sabalenka seems to be in very good form and she looks to be hitting the ball extremely well. At her best, Aryna Sabalenka is an elite player and we have seen that ability in this tournament. With that in mind, I see Aryna Sabalenka winning this match and making it into the quarterfinals.
