Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Aryna Sabalenka will take on Varvara Lepchenko in the opening round of the WTA Coupe Banque Nationale in Quebec City, Canada.

Following a very successful August, Aryna Sabalenka has moved into the top 20 in the world and will enter this tournament as the top-seeded player. Sabalenka made a deep run in the US Open as she made it into the fourth round of the tournament. Before the US Open, Aryna Sabalenka won her first WTA title as she won the WTA Connecticut Open. This will be a great chance for Aryna Sabalenka to win her second WTA title since the majority of the top tennis players have not returned following the US Open and her competition will be slightly weaker than usual. Considering how well Aryna Sabalenka has been playing in recent weeks, Aryna Sabalenka will be very hard to beat.

On the other side of the coin, Varvara Lepchenko will look to eliminate the top seed. Lepchenko had a very poor US Open as she failed to make it past the qualifiers but she did manage to get some wins at the WTA 125K event in Chicago. The conditions in Quebec City will be more familiar to Varvara Lepchenko than her opponent since she is from North America This will play to the advantage of Varvara Lepchenko. That being said, there is a significant gap in skill between Varvara Lepchenko and Aryna Sabalenka which can be seen by the ranking. Varvara Lepchenko is ranked 97ths while Aryna Sabalenka is ranked 20th.

This will be the first time that Varvara Lepchenko and Aryna Sabalenka will play each other.

Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick Sabalenka to win. Aryna Sabalenka is in much better form and is much more skilled as can be seen by the ranking. I see Sabalenka making the second round with ease.

Pick:
Aryna Sabalenka
