Ashleigh Barty and Alize Cornet meet in the round robin stages of the 2018 tennis Hopman Cup.

Ashleigh Barty ended the season in impressive form, as she made the semifinals in Wuhan and also ended up winning the WTA Elite Trophy. Barty finished the year winning 11 of her last 15 matches and could really fly up the rankings if she carries over that success in 2019. Barty has always had the potential to be a top-10 player, but she’s often been hit or miss with her play and can allow unforced errors to takeover her game. When Barty is hitting with pace and not giving away so many free points, she’s capable of blowing many quality players off the court. Barty is a player I will be watching closely to start the new season, as she showed signs of finally turning the corner these past few months. Barty has won four of her last six matches on indoor hard court.

Alize Cornet couldn’t finish the 2018 season much worse, as she lost eight of her last 10 matches and is coming off a challenger match in which she lost to Timea Bacsinszky in 16 games. Since winning the Swiss Open, Cornet has been a completely different player and has struggled with her serve big time. Cornet has been piling up the double faults and has been winning almost no points on her second serve. The good news is that Cornet has had some time off and that usually helps players who are in a funk. Going back to the drawing board and clearing her head should help Cornet, and of course, a victory here would do wonders for her confidence. Cornet has lost four of her last six matches on indoor hard court.

These two have split the two previous meetings, as Barty won in Montreal in 2018 and Cornet won in the 2014 French Open. Both matches were decided in straight sets.

The time away should help Cornet get back on track, but I’m not picking her to win this match. Even if Cornet was playing well, Barty is the better player and should be very confident with the way her season ended. Barty also has the power to blow Cornet off the court.

Barty should win this match in straight sets.

Pick:
Ashleigh Barty
