Ashleigh Barty and Amanda Anisimova meet in the semifinals of the 2019 tennis French Open.
Ashleigh Barty is coming off a straight sets win over Madison Keys that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Barty won 81 percent of her first serve points and 63 percent of her second serve points. Barty won 73 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her five break points. Barty got 60 percent of her first serves in play and faced just one break point the whole match. Barty also had another match where she had less than 20 unforced errors, and it’s just hard to beat quality players when they don’t beat themselves. Barty looks to make her first career grand slam final appearance and the ninth final appearance of her career overall. A win here would give Barty hr third final appearance of the year. Barty has won nine of her last 11 matches on clay court.
Amanda Anisimova is coming off a straight sets win over Simona Halep that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Anisimova won 65 percent of her first serve points and 65 percent of her second serve points. Anisimova won 65 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her seven break points. Anisimova got 74 percent of her first serves in play and saved six of her seven break points. Easily the biggest win of her career at just 17 years old, Anisimova has won all 10 sets this tournament and has been broken just once in her last two matches. Anisimova looks to make her first career grand slam final appearance and the third final appearance of her career overall. Anisimova now has two career wins over top-10 players. Anisimova has won seven of her last nine matches on clay court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Nobody should be overlooking Anisimova after she cruised by the clear favorite to win this tournament. She should have your attention. With that said, Anisimova is still just 17 years old and very green to these stages. An upset or two can happen, but we almost never see somebody with zero grand slam success or a lack of main tour experience make a run to a grand slam final out of nowhere. These things usually come to an end before the cinderella story can be completed, and you have to question just how Anisimova is going to handle the nerves and the new attention beating Halep is going to bring. It’s a first for Barty as well, but she has far more experience and success, and she’s playing with a new level of confidence right now.
Barty should make her first career grand slam final.
