2019 French Open winner, Ashleigh Barty will begin her grass court season at the Birmingham Classic as she takes on Donna Vekic in the opening round.
Ashleigh Barty has been in outstanding form in recent weeks with her previous tournament being the French Open. Barty was outstanding throughout the French Open which she won. Prior to the French Open, Barty won the Miami Masters. In 2019, Barty has a record of 33-6 which has resulted in her becoming the number 2 player in the world. Moving onto grass courts should only boost Ashleigh Barty as she has an incredible record on grass. In 2018, Barty won 77% of her grass court matches which led her to win the Nottingham Open. Ashleigh Barty should enjoy playing at the Birmingham Classic since she has an outstanding record at this venue. Barty finished second at the Birmingham Classic in 2017. Considering her record and this venue and her current form, Ashleigh Barty will be very tough to stop in this tournament.
On the other side of the coin, Donna Vekic has also been in outstanding touch as she played the Nottingham Open last week where she finished second. Donna Vekic was very impressive in the final which she lost to Caroline Garcia. During the loss, Vekic was defeated in 2 tiebreakers which resulted in her losing the second and final sets. The Birmingham Classic is a much tougher tournament than the Nottingham Open but Vekic looked in very good touch so she will be optimistic in her ability to cause an upset in this match.
Donna Vekic and Ashleigh Barty have not played each other in the past.
Both Ashleigh Barty and Donna Vekic look in outstanding form and that should ensure we are treated to a good quality tennis match. Picking a winner is not an easy task but I am going to side with Ashleigh Barty. Barty has been outstanding in 2019 and her French Open victory shows that she is in incredible form. Barty is an outstanding grass court player and that should only make her harder to defeat.
