The Line: -- Over/Under:
Ashleigh Barty and Julia Goerges meet in the final of the 2019 tennis Birmingham Classic.
Ashleigh Barty is coming off a straight sets win over Barbora Strycova that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Barty won 83 percent of her first serve points and 66 percent of her second serve points. Barty won 74 percent of her total service points and converted on two of her four break points. Barty got 50 percent of her first serves in play, saved all five break points and had 11 aces. Barty is going for her shots more and more as the confidence continues to build, and she’s now won 12 straight sets. There’s no letdown after winning a grand slam, and now Barty has a chance to become the top ranked player in the world. Barty hopes to win her third title this year and the sixth of her career. Barty has won four of her last five final appearances and is 1-1 in career final appearances on grass. Barty has won six of her last seven matches on grass court.
Julia Goerges is coming off a straight sets win over Petra Martic that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Goerges won 83 percent of her first serve points and 42 percent of her second serve points. Goerges won 69 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her 10 break points. Goerges got 65 percent of her first serves in play, saved one of her two break points and won 49 percent of her return points. Goerges has won eight of her nine sets this tournament. Goerges also has 16 career wins over top-10 players, but none of those wins have come this year. Goerges looks to win her second title of the year and the eighth of her career. Goerges has won five of her last six final appearances and is 0-1 in career final appearances on grass. Goerges has won nine of her last 10 matches on grass court.
These two have split the previous two meetings, as Barty won 2018 Zhuhai in three sets, while Goerges won 2018 Birmingham in straight sets.
Goerges has a great deal of success on grass and beat Barty last year on this surface in 22 games. The problem is Barty is enjoying the best stretch of her career and is tapping into other parts of her game she hasn’t shown consistently. Instead of being the passive, defensive player, Barty is looking for her shots more and being the aggressor more often. Barty has won 12 straight sets and has a chance to be the No. 1 player in the world with a victory here. I just don’t see anybody stoping the Aussie in her current form.
Barty wins her third title in 2019.
