Ashleigh Barty vs Julia Gorges 2018 WTA Elite Trophy Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Australian tennis superstar, Ashleigh Barty will play Julia Gorges from Germany in the semifinals of the 2018 WTA Elite Trophy in China.

Julia Gorges in the reigning champion and she managed to retain her great record at this tournament by beating Elise Mertens to secure her spot in the semifinals. After losing her opening match to Anett Kontaveit, Julia Gorges came back well as she beat Mertens in straight sets. During the win, Gorges dominated the opening set by which she won 6-2 before fighting hard to win the second set via a tiebreaker. It was impressive watching Gorges serve as she only lost 1 service game in the entire match. The serving was a huge improvement for Julia Gorges as she lost 5 fewer service games in her second match when compared to her first. Gorges has an exceptional record at the WTA Elite Trophy and having had the experience of winning the title, she should feel comfortable at this stage of the event.

On the other side of the court, Ashleigh Barty made it into this match thanks to Caroline Garcia who managed to beat Aryna Sabalenka in yesterdays matches. Similar to Gorges, Barty lost her opening match but won her second match as she defeated Caroline Garcia in straight sets. Barty has looked shaky this tournament but she has managed to do enough to make it this far. Winning this match will another tough challenge for Ashleigh Bary as she is playing the reigning champion who seems to be in good form.

Julia Gorges and Ashleigh Barty have played once in the past where Gorges won. The match was at WTA Birmingham this season where Gorges beat Barty in straight sets.

All in all, I am picking Julia Gorges to win this match. Gorges looks to be in better form and she should be at an advantage considering she won this event 12 months ago.
