The Line: -- Over/Under:
Ashleigh Barty and Karolina Muchova meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis US Open.
Ashleigh Barty is coming off a straight sets win over Lucie Safarova that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Barty won 86 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Barty won 69 percent of her total service points and faced just two break points in the victory. Barty has been highly impressive ever since winning the title in Nottingham and is going to give herself a chance every time she hits the court if her unforced errors are under 20. Barty has a chance to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time in her career. Barty is 0-4 for her career in grand slam third round matches. Barty has won eight of her last 10 matches on hard court.
Karolina Muchova is coming off a straight sets win over Garbine Muguruza that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Muchova won 63 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Muchova pulled off one of the bigger upsets of the tournament by hitting 41 winners and winning 42 percent of her return points. Muchova was putting on a shotmaking clinic once she decided to play relaxed and looked for her spots after dropping the first set. This is the first ever grand slam appearance for the 22-year-old Muchova, and she just made her main tour debut about a year ago, so she’s extremely inexperienced and nerves are expected. However, Muchova clearly has some above-average ability and should have earned everybody’s attention with her recent performance. Muchova has won five straight matches on hard court.
There’s no previous matches between these two players.
Muchova is a skilled player who shouldn’t be slept on, as she has shotmaking ability and looked like the better player for two sets against Muguruza. She didn’t luck into that victory. With that said, Barty has a clear edge in experience and hits the ball with such pace that won’t allow Muchova to get as comfortable. And while this is a big moment for Muchova, this is equally as big with Barty looking for her first deep grand slam as well.
I like Barty to edge this one out.
