Ashleigh Barty and Lauren Davis meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis US Open..
Ashleigh Barty is coming off a three sets win over Zarina Diyas that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Barty won 83 percent of her first serve points and 56 percent of her second serve points. Barty won 68 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her six break points. Barty got 43 percent of her first serves in play and had 36 unforced errors to 27 winners. Barty obviously needs to play cleaner tennis, but it is encouraging to see her win while not playing her best. Those type of wins can take a players confidence to a new level. Barty has made the third round of a grand slam seven times in her last eight tries. Barty has won four of her last five matches on hard court.
Lauren Davis is coming off a straight sets win over Johanna Larsson that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Davis won 68 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Davis won 62 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her eight break points. Davis got 60 percent of her first serves in play and saved seven of her nine break points. Seven of Davis’ last nine wins have been decided in straight sets. Davis has four career wins over top-10 players, with one of those wins coming this year. Davis hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the sixth time in her career. Davis has won five of her last seven matches on hard court.
These two have played once, which was 2014 Mexico, a match Barty won in three sets. The match was decided in 29 games.
Davis has shown she’s capable of putting together a winning performance against top tier players, and she has the home crowd behind her to give her that extra boost. However, Davis hasn’t been consistent enough to provide much confidence against Barty, who has been head and shoulders the best player all year on the women’s side. Barty also can’t play much worse than she did in her opening match.
Barty makes the third round in New York.
