Ashleigh Barty and Maria Sakkari meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Cincinnati Open.
Ashleigh Barty is coming off a three sets win over Anett Kontaveit that took 34 games to decide. In the victory, Barty won 69 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Barty won 61 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 11 break points. Barty got 60 percent of her first seres in play and saved eight of her 15 break points. Barty had issues with her second serve and had seven double faults, but she played her best tennis down the stretch and produced back-to-back breaks in the final set to close the match. Barty has now won eight of her last 10 matches that have gone the distance. Barty looks to make her fourth career semifinal appearance in a Premier 5 tournament. Barty has won eight of her last nine matches on hard court.
Maria Sakkari is coming off a three sets win over Aryna Sabalenka that took 33 games to decide. In the victory, Sakkari won 81 percent of her first serve points and 55 percent of her second serve points. Sakkari won 70 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her 23 break points. Sakkari got 59 percent of her first serves in play, saved four of her five break points and hit four aces. Sakkari dug deep after dropping a frustrating fist set tiebreak, and she has given herself 35 break points in her last three matches. Sakkari has now won four of her last five matches that have gone the distance. Sakkari has seven career wins over top-10 players, and two of those wins have come in this tournament. Sakkari looks to make her third career semifinal appearance in a Premier 5 tournament. Sakkari has won six of her last eight matches on hard court.
These two have played three times and Barty has won two of those matches, including the most recent this year in the Australian Open. Sakkari’s only win over Barty came in the 2018 Indian Wells. All three matches took place on hard court and the last two matches are decided in straight sets.
Sakkari has five wins over top-10 players this year and two of those wins have come in the last few days. It would be foolish to write Sakkari off at this point. With that said, Barty is just way too consistent to bet against, and the fact she won her last match despite playing poorly should give you even more confidence. Barty isn’t going to have those unforced error issues again and her serve will be a lot tighter.
Barty makes the semifinal of Cincinnati for the first time.
