Ashleigh Barty and Samantha Stosur meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis Miami Open.

Ashleigh Barty is coming off a straight sets win over Dayana Yastremska that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Barty won 72 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Barty won 61 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her seven break points. Barty managed to cruise in her opening match despite eight double faults and seven break points. Barty still has areas of her game she can clean up, but she’s still managed to win 18 of her last 22 matches overall, so she’s easily one of the hottest players on tour currently and could soon be a top-10 player in the world. Barty hopes to make the fourth round of a Premier Mandatory for the third time in her career. Barty has won seven of her last nine matches on outdoor hard court.

Samantha Stosur is coming off a three sets win over Madison Keys that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Stosur won 62 percent of her first serve points and 41 percent of her second serve points. Stosur won 53 percent of her total service points and converted on seven of her 11 break points. It was easily one of the best wins for Stosur as of late, grinding out a top-20 player on American soil in a little over two hours. Stosur entered this tournament losing 12 of her last 15 matches, so any sort of success she can build on moving forward has to be considered progress. Stosur has a chance to win three straight matches for the first time since making the semifinals in Mallorca back in June. Stosur has split her last four matches on outdoor hard court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2017 Miami Open, a match Stosur won in straight sets. The match took 20 games to be decided.

A case can be made here for Stosur given the massive experience edge and the fact she just beat Keys in America, which is no easy task. With that said, that’s about the only promising thing Stosur has shown us in the last six months, as she’s been in awful form to say the least. Barty has been one of the hotter players to start 2019 and you can see the confidence building as she looks for her shots more and more.

Barty should win this match, likely in straight sets.
