Belinda Bencic and Bianca Andreescu meet in the semifinals of the 2019 tennis US Open.
Belinda Bencic is coming off a straight sets win over Donna Vekic that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Bencic won 84 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Bencic won 71 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her eight break points. Bencic got 51 percent of her first serves in play, faced one break point and hit eight aces. Bencic can be better with her first serve percentage and needs to clean up the double faults, but she’s won eight of nine sets this tournament and looks like a player who knows she belongs. Bencic hopes to make her first career grand slam final appearance, the third final appearance of the year and her 10th final appearance of her career. Bencic has won seven of her last nine matches on hard court.
Bianca Andreescu is coming off a three sets win over Elise Mertens that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Andreescu won 75 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Andreescu won 65 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her 16 break points. Andreescu got 62 percent of her first serves in play, saved four of her six break points and hit two aces. Andreescu has now won each of her last 12 matches that have gone the distance. Andreescu is playing the best tennis of her life right now and you can see the confidence building in the 19-year-old, as she has a bit of a pep in her step right now. Andreescu hopes to make her first career grand slam final appearance, the fourth final appearance of the year and her fourth final appearance of her career. Andreescu has won 14 of her last 15 matches on hard court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
This is going to be a hell of a matchup and you can make a strong case for either side. Bencic has been a giant killer all year and seems to play her best on the biggest stages or when she’s running into a quality opponent. However, Andreescu has been the hottest player on the woman’s side over the last month or so and has that attitude in her game that’s needed in moments like this. While she doesn’t have much hardware in big tournaments and is still very young for the main tour, Andreescu has a certain level of confidence you need to win grand slams. Bencic has made us a lot of money this year and it hurts to bet against her here, but it just feels like it’s Andreescu’s time right now, and we deserve a Andreescu - Serena rematch after what happened in Toronto.
I have Andreescu reaching the final in New York.
