Sofia Kenin and Belinda Bencic meet in the final of the 2019 tennis Mallorca Open.
Sofia Kenin is coming off a three sets win over Anastasija Sevastova that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Kenin won 70 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Kenin won 64 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her 11 break points. Kenin got 62 percent of her first serves in play and saved four of her six break points. Kenin has won back-to-back matches in three sets and has won five of her last eight matches that have gone the distance. Kenin is clearly building on her run in the French Open and is a 20-year-old who is growing before our very eyes. Kenin looks to win her second title of the year and the second title of her career. Kenin is 1-1 in career final appearances and this will be her first ever final appearance on grass. Kenin has won eight of her last 10 matches on grass court.
Belinda Bencic is coming off a three sets win over Angelique Kerber that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Bencic won 74 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Bencic won 65 percent of her total service points and converted on two of her seven break points. Bencic got 67 percent of her first serves in play and saved 10 of her 13 break points. It wasn’t the prettiest performance from Bencic, but she buckled down after dropping the first set and saved all five of her break points down the stretch. Bencic now has 21 career wins over top-10 players, with eight of those wins coming this year. Bencic looks to win her second title of the year and the fourth title of her career. Bencic has split her last six final appearances and is 1-1 in career final appearances on grass. Bencic has won seven of her last eight matches on grass court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
This is sure to be a fun final between two feisty players who are aggressive with the return and look to finish points on their terms. You can make a case for either side, but Bencic is hard to bet against given what she’s done all year and the level of focus she plays with when she’s stringing these wins together. As well as Kenin has played these last few weeks, she’s still very young and lacks the experience in these types of matches, which is often a key downfall in final appearances.
I like Bencic to win her second title of the year.
